Key Fob Battery Died? What to Do Before Calling a Locksmith

by | Jun 29, 2026 | Automotive

A dead key fob can catch you off guard at the worst possible moment. Whether you’re parked in a Germantown lot or outside a Cordova grocery store, a fob that won’t respond doesn’t always mean a serious problem. In most cases, a simple battery swap is all it takes. But when the issue goes deeper, knowing your options helps you avoid wasted time and unnecessary dealer visits.

Try the Physical Key First

Almost every key fob has a hidden mechanical key tucked inside it. Look for a small release button or tab on the back and slide or press it to pop the key out. That metal key will open your door lock cylinder directly, even when the fob has no power. Once you’re inside, try holding the fob close to the push-button start or ignition. Many vehicles can read the transponder chip at close range even with a drained battery.

If your car doesn’t have a visible keyhole on the door handle, check the door frame or look for a covered slot near the handle. Manufacturers sometimes hide the cylinder for a cleaner look, but it’s still there on most models.

Replace the Battery Yourself

Most key fobs use a CR2032 or CR2025 coin battery, available at any drugstore or grocery store in the Memphis area. To replace it:

  • Use a small flathead screwdriver or coin to gently pry the fob open along the seam
  • Note which side the old battery faces before removing it
  • Press the new battery in with the correct side facing up
  • Snap the fob back together and test it

If your fob works again after a fresh battery, you’re done. If it still doesn’t respond, or works intermittently, the issue may go beyond the battery.

When the Fob Still Doesn’t Work After a Battery Change

A fob that stays unresponsive after a new battery points to one of several possible causes:

  • The fob lost its programming during the battery swap
  • The circuit board was damaged by a drop or water exposure
  • The vehicle’s receiver is not reading the fob signal

Drivers dealing with a key fob that won’t respond even with a working battery often find that reprogramming is needed. A mobile automotive locksmith can handle this on-site, wherever your car is parked, without requiring a dealership appointment or a tow.

Key Fob Programming and Replacement Options

When a fob needs to be reprogrammed or replaced, dealerships are one option, but scheduling, towing, and dealer rates add up fast. We provide car key fob programming across Memphis and the surrounding Mid-South area. If you need a full replacement, our car key replacement service covers most domestic and foreign vehicle models, and all remote and transponder work is backed by a 6-month warranty.

Signs the Problem Is Something Else Entirely

If your car won’t start even after getting inside with the physical key, the problem may be with the ignition system rather than the fob. Worn or damaged ignition components are a separate repair, and we handle ignition repair and replacement on-site across the Memphis area.

If you’ve lost your fob entirely and have no spare, that’s an all-keys-lost situation. It requires more involved programming work, but a mobile locksmith can still take care of it at your location without a tow. Our automotive locksmith page covers the full range of vehicle key and fob services we offer.
